Gorgeous antique painting, oil on canvas, depicting children with a fruit basket.
On the back is a cartouche with an attribution to Domenico Fedeli aka Il Maggiotto (Venice 1713 - 1794).
The work is here proposed as coming from Maggiotto’s circle, as a precautionary measure. However, we believe that our canvas is easily attributable to the production of busts of teenagers and genre scenes belonging to Maggiotto and that the attribution can therefore be shared for the easy drafting and the use of glazes, although faithful to Piazzetta’s chiaroscuro, declined in reddish-brown tones, grey-pearly intonations and delicate nuances. The corrections that can be noticed by carefully observing the work, as clearly visible under the girl's chin, according to us, further support the attribution.
Domenico Fedeli attended the studio of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) of which he was a pupil. Maggiotto never moved from Venice, remaining faithful to Piazzetta’s chiaroscuro with reddish-brown tones, reworking the iconographic and technical repertoire with skill, preferring bucolic and popular subjects.
Framed in a beautiful frame of the nineteenth century, lacquered and gilded wood, which has defects and restorations.
In good overall condition considering the age of the painting, note some old sparse restorations and some light uncovering, but nothing really significant. The original canvas is supported by an old re-lining in good condition.
