Original colour woodcut by Utagawa Kunisada III (1848-1920) - from the series "Genji gojuyon cho" 源氏五十四帖 - Japan - 1898

From the series "Genij gojuyon-cho - The adventures of Prince Genji in 54 chapters". A heroic epic, written around the year 1000 by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu.
Here chapter 15: Prince Genji with courtesan and servant while watching a crane flying at the sunset.

Signed: Toyokuni ga (artist name of Kunisada I to III after the founder of the Utagawa school, Toyokuni)

Dated on the left edge: Meiji 30 (= 1898)

Format: oban yoko-e (35.5 x 24.2 cm)

The 54 chapters are outlined on a front page in the form of shells and a short description (see the attached photo).
