Original woodblock print - Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) - 'Ukibune' - From the series "Genji gojuyon cho" (Fifty-four Chapters of the Genji monogatari) - 1895
Gekko approaches his subject in a poetic, picturesque way. This means that the woodblock engravers and printers needed very special skills and craftsmanship.
This is a beautiful print of a couple in a boat in a snowy landscape. Everything looks indeed like a dream world. In his times, Gekko was an important artist who won many prices at exhibitions.
This woodblock print is in very good condition with very pretty colours, well printed, complete with "bokashi" (comparable with iris print) and gaufrage (relief print) in the snowy branches and the white cartouche. Japanese album paper on the back, as issued.
Measurements: 34.5 x 23 cm (somewhat trimmed on the right)
