Sculpture - Wood - Nkisi - Yombe - Congo DRC

Description
Sculpture - Wood - Nkisi - Yombe - Congo DRC
2nd half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

This is a wonderful and rare Nkisi figurine of the Yombe. Typical of the Yombe the head is lifted upwards with an open mouth.

Many of these Nkisi (spirit) figurines have a cavity in the abdomen filled with magical substances covered with glass. A vulva sticks out of the abdomen of this figurine indicating that this is a powerful female fetish. This fetish is invoked for fertility and successful births, as well as for health and well being for women.

The wood is hard and has a soft glossy patina. Old tear on the right side. See the pictures.

The figurine will be carefully packed and sent by registered and insured mail.
