Cor van Velsen (1921-2010) poster artist was born in 1921 in Hilversum to a Catholic family. His drawing talent is already noticed at a young age by his father, who helps him to his first job at advertising agency Kastelein. Here, Cor van Velsen goes to work as a seventeen-year-old. He also follows drawing lessons at an evening academy in Amsterdam. Cor van Velsen continues to work at Kastelein during the Second World War. After the war, he can get a studio in an Amsterdam canal house and he starts for himself. In 1947, Van Velsen is commissioned by the Algemene Vereniging voor Vreemdelingenverkeer – the current tourist office - a poster to attract more foreign tourists to the Netherlands. It becomes a poster with a wooden shoe and the text See Holland and it means his big breakthrough.
