First edition. Published in Philadelphia, PA, in two volumes. Large 8vo size. Two frontispiece portraits (tissue-guarded), title pages with engraved vignettes, 931 [464; 467] pp.; I: 11 tissue-guarded engraved plates, two maps (of three); II: map; large, multiple folded chart, and seven tissue-guarded engraved plates; numerous steel-engravings throughout in the text. Original uniform pictorial embossed cloth with gilt title on the spines. Original brown endpapers.
On the title pages, the title is shorter: Arctic explorations in the years 1853, '54, '55.
Seems to lack one map in vol 1 (rear pocket empty). Some light rubbing to extremities, light pencilled marginalia to one text leaf, otherwise a very good, clean set. Rare in the original bindings.
Provenance: Pictorial bookplate of Wayne S. Franklin (a relative of Sir John?) on the front paste-downs; Franklin's name written in the top-margin of the title to volume one, and dated 1910.
