In 1926, he became Emperor of Japan. He was the 124th in a royal line reaching far back into his country's history. And although he chose Showa as his Reign name, to the world he was known a Hirohito. At the end of World War 2, it was Hirohito's broadcasts that smoothed the transition of power for the Japanese people. Furthermore, in accordance with the construction of 1947. Hirohito renounced the claims of divinity that he had formerly been assigned to him and became the "symbol of state" for the democratic monarchy. In his long reign, Hirohito guided his country through strife and war, and brought his nation confidently into the modern twentieth century.
One aspect of modernization that the Emperor was personally fond of was the automobile - and particularly the Mercedes-Benz 770K. Of the 117 cars that were produced in its seven years of productions, Emperor Hirohito bought seven himself and drove many of them into the 1960's. The Mercedes-Benz 770K Was a supercharged touring car with the ability to reach speeds over 95 miles per hour. Certainly the most powerful touring car yet designed at Stuttgart, the 770K was completely new from front to back. Built on a solid box-section chassis with power assisted brakes, the 770K weighed nearly 6000 pounds. The straight-eight overhead-valve engine was further enhanced by a supercharger.
Fitted with either a sedan, limousine, or drop-head body, the 770K was an imposing vehicle intended only for heads of states, dignitaries, and businessmen approved by Daimler-Benz. To complement the already impressive appearance of his 770K, the Emperor had the symbol of his reign, the chrysanthemum, emblazoned in gold plated on the door and grille.
A car of extreme elegance and power, the Mercedes-Benz 770K was the only car for a man of Hirohito's stature, a car that could regally bring the Emperor to his people and is still regarded as a landmark for Mercedes-Benz to date!
