Since 1922 he exhibited his works in the Venice Biennale, winning the sculpture prize in 1942, in 1932 he moved to Milan, where he obtained, in 1934, the chair of sculpture at the Brera Academy of which he became director, after only two years. In 1949 he exhibited at the 3rd Sculpture International in Philadelphia together with Marino Marini and Picasso. His most significant works include: the Busti of Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Monument to Pius XI in the Duomo of Milan, the Monument to Pius XII in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Cavallo Morente (Dying Horse) at the Palazzo RAI in Rome.
