Saverio Terruso, great Italian artist from the 20th century, was born in Monreale (Palermo) but he soon moved to Milan to attend the Accademia di Brera, where he later became professor of painting in 1979.
He was a highly appreciated artist at an international level: his success in the 1980s was great in the United States, particularly in New York, Chicago, South America and Hong Kong, where he was one of the first Western artists to appear.
Terruso never forgot his Mediterranean origins, emotionally linked to his homeland, Sicily. In his paintings he wanted to convey the charm of a rural world now on the verge of disappearing forever, depicting rural characters, especially women melancholically isolated in their shawls, curved in their daily household chores...
His painting is characterised by rather dramatic tones, with bright tensions, and strong and often deforming colours.
This painting dates back to the artist’s early period, 1960s, and it already contains his artistic style.
