PAPILLON, Jean-Michel (1698-1776).
Three impressions of woodcuts for an almanac (Étrennes spirituelles dedié [sic] a M. Le Dauphin). [Paris], 1733.
February: Shroves tuesday
May: Garden scene
July: Festivity with fireworks
Three small calendar woodcuts, signed in the block Papillon f. or Papillon inv. et fecit, Original impressions of woodcuts by Jean-Michel Papillon for a suite of full-page almanac illustrations, The crisp impressions of these woodcut, which are so fine that they resemble wood engravings or even etchings, reveal Papillon’s exceptional skill with the knife and gouge; and they are masterfully printed, reflecting his attempts to elevate the neglected art of the woodcut to the status it had possessed before being eclipsed by intaglio methods in the seventeenth century.
The suite was evidently cut in the early 1730s.
