Ancient mask in very hardwood from Liberia.
The Grebo ethnic group is established at the border between Ivory Coast and Liberia.
This type of mask would be used in funerary rituals, the many pairs of eyes would symbolise the ancestors.
It also seems that these sorts of masks would have been worn during combats.
Grebo masks have sometimes been attributed to the Kru, a very close ethnic group in Ivory Coast.
Collected in situ.
