Description
Petrified Wood - Slice/Table Top - Dipterocarpus sp. - 5×51×91 cm
NEOGENE-Miocene, Aquitanian (20.44–23.03 million years) - Indonesia

Beautiful huge table top of petrified wood.

Petrified wood is a mineralized piece of a tree, which came into existence because the trees fell down and were then covered under a layer of soil or sand. This often came about as the result of a natural disaster. The colours that you see in petrified wood depended upon the minerals in the soil or sand. Each mineral provides its own colour. The process of ''fossilisation'' ensures that all the characteristics such as the knots, bark and tree rings of the wood, are preserved. An eventual rotting processes from the distant past can result in beautiful crystallisation, often in multiple colours.
