Important Idumu Mask – Lega – D.R.C.

In good state. it dates to around 1930.On stand.

Provenance: Ex – collection of Nic de Kun, Brussels. Acquired from him by H. Westerdijk around 1970.Collected by him in situ around 1955.

This impressive and highly interesting mask bears all the traits of the far more common Lukwakongo version of this type, but is in fact an elongated form of it. Striking here is the rather prominent nose that dominates the face. This old piece has lost most of its original white kaolin coating with its characteristic, sparkling mica /quarts particles. The rest of the heart-shaped face is highly conform the norm with eyes slightly off-balance and a tiny mouth showing teeth in a upper and lower row. The rim has old holes for the attachment of a beard that is now missing. Idimu masks are collectively owned by a chapter of the Bwami society and guarded by a graded member in a basket together with other educational objects. They are far more rare than the privately owned Lukwakongo pieces that every Bwami member held. Fine, well-patinated interior, a true sign of long use.
