(*) Paul Kostabi (*1962. Whittier, USA) known for his psychologically devastated expressionist self-portraits has also accumulated an impressive body of landscapes, still life paintings, pure abstractions and various comically bold appropriations of various contemporary artists, such as Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Giles. Paul Kostabi's work is full of careless care. The use of words is another graphic device that Paul has taken from the tradition of modernist painting, first explored by Picasso and then by Stuart Davis, Ed Ruscha, Mimmo Rotella and Basquiat. Obviously, he loves painting, either on low-quality canvases for students, or on the finest Belgian linen, ripped cardboard or on the best watercolour Arches paper. Similarly, Paul would paint with equal passion for Mars Bar or MoMA. His only guide is the artistic spirit, and he will even subvert it if he wishes.
