Copy after a painting by Cornelis Vreedenburg. The first ship of the artist W.B. Tholen de Eudia, on this painting by Cornelis Vreedenburgh (1880-1946) in summer colours, is in the Loosdrechtse plassen. On the shore, Tholen and the ladies Tholen and Vreedenburgh are having a picnic. Vreedenburgh has been a pupil of Tholen. The painting (privately owned) is dated 1931 at the bottom right, the year in which Tholen died, which may have been the reason for Vreedenburgh to finish this painting, probably after a study or drawing made earlier on location.
Like the artist Paul Arntzenius, Vreedenburgh, as a young boy, frequently traveled with Tholen during his wanderings on the Eudia.
Tholens Eudia still exists. The current owner, Mark G. Sisouw de Zilwa, has dedicated an article to it in the Spiegel der Zeilvaart (31st year nr 4, May 2007).
