Oil on canvas on panel - Notched on the back - 1864- 1938

Beautiful painting of barges on the Scheldt in an unusual format. Nice little oak panel. Skilfully and smoothly painted in the Impressionist style of the Molse School. Small damage to the frame. See the photo.

Charles (Karel) Martin Claessens (Antwerp, 1864 - Berchem, 1938) was a Flemish painter who painted Antwerp and Kempen landscapes.
He stayed in Achterbos (Mol) from 1884 to 1918, and later in his Schildershuis in Galbergen. Claessens was a student and friend of Jakob Smits. He was a member of the Molse School.
His work is included in the permanent collection of the Jakob Smitsmuseum.
