Adriaen Van Ostade (Haarlem 1610-1685) - ''Coppia in conversazione''

Description
Adriaen Van Ostade (Haarlem 1610-1685) - ''Coppia in conversazione''
Etching - Plate signed - 1650 ca.

Very sharp proof printed on seventeenth-century laid paper. In good overall condition: small deficiency on top right margin. Hollstein n. 37.

Painter, born in Haarlem in 1610, died there in 1684. He almost always painted rustic interiors, taverns, mostly in small size, with groups of peasants. The first of his paintings - about a thousand - signed was from 1631 (Paris, Louvre). In the early paintings, the lively figures are marked by wit. Painting style, as well as engraving, is simultaneously accurate and relaxed, and it tends to a saturated chiaroscuro where Rembrandt’ influence, after c. 1640, is visible. Little by little, especially after 1660, the compositions became calmer and more intimate; after 1670, the colour became brighter and the light less intense. Many drawings by the master are left, some of which are watercolours, and 50 highly sought-after etchings.
