Pietro Testa (1611-1650) - Saint Mary, Saint Roch with a plague scene

Pietro Testa (1611-1650) - Saint Mary, Saint Roch with a plague scene
Etching - Plate signed - 1630-1635

Saint Mary (the Blessed Virgin) with the Christ Child and Saint Nicholas with Saint Roch with a plague scene.

Three Lucchese patron saints, Sts Nicholas Tolentino, Nicholas of Bari and Roch, interceding with the Virgin and Child for the victims of the plague

Signed with the monogram mof Testa (PT) bottom right.

Date: c.1630-1660
Condition Report: Good impression on laid paper with watermark, trimmed on the plate border.

Literature: Same print in Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Accession Number: 1963.30.37193. Original in British Museum V,10.136. Cropper 1988 7.II, Bartsch XX.218.13

This print is mostly given as a copy after Testa because there is a mirror image with the same scene in several collections.

Interesting is the Wellcome collection has the a same print as here on auction but with the additional work on the clouds as also visible on the mirror image. They give it as original etching by Testa.

The print on auctions seems to be an earliy unfinished state of this print.

I added images of the British Museum and Wellcome collection as last images.

Interesting piece of art, still to be discovered.
