Anthropomorphe Nazeze Figur "Mani-Yanda"
D. R. Kongo, Azande

Wood, layered brown patina with yellow pigments, angular, geometric form, a hemispherical head with flat nose and holes as eyes, traces of yellow pigment sacrificial remains, slight signs of abrasion.
The abstract Yanda figures are from the Mani society and should promote the well-being of members, maintain health and prosperity, protect against evil spells and guarantee success.
They are mostly made of wood, sometimes terracotta.
The aesthetic appearance had no influence on the effectiveness, the most important factor was that it should be carved in a holy wood,
They had special consecration rituals and where taken continuous care in small shrines outside the village.

The Mani carvers where not very prolific and those figures are quite seldom. Male Yanda figures are named Uza or Balikenge, and female ones Namani.
