PROVENANCE: This mask was collected in the 1970's by L'eon B'asjrach who did field work as anthropologist with François Neyt, and published an article about Ikhokos in the Tribal Arts magazine.

The Lwena Pwo mask represent the ideal beautiful women.

Fine ritual scarification show the beauty of a young girl, teeth finely and detailed carved.

Like the famous pwo masks of the neighboring Chokwe, Lwena pwevo dance masks were part of a complex masquerade practice which was integral to pre-colonial Lwena cosmology. Owing to the small population of the Lwena people, as compared to the surviving arts of the populous Chokwe, classic Lwena art is extremely rare..

BW ill: Field photo from a 1920's post card featuring a Lwena Pwevo/Pwo performer holding a flywhisk and hand rattle made from a tin can.
The mask dances with the women who clap and sing to musically accompany the performer. Photo from Baltimore Museum of Art From "CHOKWE! - Art and Initiation Among Chokwe and Related Peoples".
