He won five consecutive Tour de France (from 1991 to 1995) and two consecutive Giro d’Italia (1992 and 1993). He also was world time trial champion (1995) and Olympic time trial champion (1996), and hour record holder (1994) for two months.
He also won several one-week stage races and one-day classic races. We should mention the Volta a Catalunya (1988, 1991 and 1992), the Paris–Nice (1989 and 1990), the Clásica de San Sebastián (1990), the Spanish National Road Race Championships (1992) and the Dauphiné Libéré (1995 and 1996). He greatly excelled at time trial stages to achieve those titles. He was also one of the best climbers in the cycling scene.
According to the Cycling Hall of Fame, Induráin is considered one of the best cyclists in history (along with Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Fausto Coppi), and the eighth best in the Tour de France, according to a panel composed of five French specialists and chosen by the organization of the Tour itself.
For his achievements, Miguel Induráin is the best Spanish cyclist of all time and one of the best athletes in the history of the country. His spirit of sacrifice and his sportsmanship after a win were remarkable. He won the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, among other awards for his sporting career.
