The coin depicts Noah's Ark. According to biblical tradition, Noah was chosen by God (Yahweh) and warned. He consequently built a ship to rescue himself and seven other people as well as a pair of each animal species from the flood.
The rising sun can be seen behind Mount Ararat in the background. The journey of Noah and his ark ended at its base. As the text of the Bible suggests, God used a dove (with an olive branch in its beak) to symbolically announce the end of the flood, because the dove is a bird that always returns home. The inscription on the edge reads the English name of the coin, ‘Noah's Ark’, and its Armenian translation.
The other side of the coin depicts the national coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia. It consists of an eagle and a lion with a four-part shield depicting the coat of arms of the four royal dynasties, Artashesian, Arshakuni, Bagratuni and Rubinian, in the centre. The central shield depicts the biblical mountain Ararat with the contours of Noah's Ark.
