(*) Joan Miró i Ferrá (1893-1983) was born in Barcelona, where he grew up and began his artistic studies. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of Surrealism.
In his works he reflected his interest in the subconscious, in the "infantile" and in the traditional culture. Although he is associated to abstract art for his mature style of stylised and imaginary forms, in his youth he began in figuration, with strong fauvist, cubist and expressionist influences, moving to a flat painting with a naïve atmosphere. From his stay in Paris in 1920, his work becomes more fantasy-and-dreamlike. He got to know Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti and exhibited together with Dalí, Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim and Max Ernst in several exhibitions on Dadaism and Surrealism. In numerous interviews and writings dating back to the 1930s, Miró expressed his desire to abandon conventional methods of painting, in his own words "kill them, kill them or rape them", to favour a form of expression that was contemporary.
He moved to Mallorca in 1956, where he focused on sculptures and ceramics until his death.
