This rare Golf GTI MK1 “Fuoriserie” is today a piece of motoring handed down to history. This special version of the Golf GTI is one of the last 10,500 MK1 produced in 1983 before the release of the new “MKII” version. They were all sold in just six months, as it should be for a limited edition.
Born on the basis of the Golf GTI, first-generation, second series, it stands out for its special alloy wheels (optional in Italy), with the “P” for Pirelli - a combination created by chance, as Pirelli supplied the design of the 14-inch wheels and of course the Pirelli “Cinturato” tyres for the European market.
Each importer would decide the set-up for these special series with some differences from country to country: Plus in France, Champaign in Switzerland and UK, Pirelli in Germany Rabbit in the United States and “Fuoriserie” in Italy, where you could equip the car with “Pirelli” rims (option). This special series of the Golf GTI MKI is marked with the letters “171G34” in the boot. To certify the authenticity of the car, certificates of origin were requested and collected directly from the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.
This specimen was found in a small village in the Ligurian mountains above the Cinque Terre, exactly in San Pietro Vara (Italy). The second owner, from whom it was purchased before the restoration, bought it in 1987 and, in the mid-nineties he gave it to his old father who in fact preserved the mechanical deterioration by driving wit it for a few kilometres in the small mountain village.
(At the time of purchase the odometer read 68,000 km.)
The body had its paint, faded by time but original, excellent proof that the car had never suffered accidents and, considering the factory galvanisation, the sheet metal was well preserved. The interiors were very worn, a disaster, and were totally replaced with new material, thanks to the skill of Carmelo Spagnolo, a craftsman specialised in this type of work. Padding, upholstery, panels... all new.
In addition, the car was equipped with four decomposable rims badly reduced and wrong, but, with a stroke of luck and a good deal of time spent making research on the Internet, in a warehouse stock over thirty years old, at a historic Pirelli official tyre dealer, I was able to find the right “Pirelli” rims (optional in Italy), which are new. When the characteristic rims were fitted, it was equipped with four new tyres. Of course, Pirelli ‘Cinturato’.
As shown in the photo, the car has been completely disassembled for total repainting. The old gaskets have been replaced with new ones, as well as the old bumpers - front and back -, taillights, indicators, rear-view mirrors, the characteristic grille with four headlights and red trim, the front spoiler - which was missing - the radio antenna, the BLAUPUNKT radio supplied in those years and all the details they needed to be restored to bring the car back to a state of faithful originality. During repainting - in the original colour - it was chosen not to disassemble the fenders and not to repaint the engine compartment, as it was considered appropriate to keep intact the original sealant with which the car was finished when it came out new from the Wolfsburg factory.
As for the mechanical parts - matching number -, the braking, the cooling system, the electrical system, all the work that was necessary to replace the old radiator with a new one was carried out, arms, heads, gaskets, sleeves, belts - distribution and services - oil, spark plugs, wires, filters, sockets and a long list of works and replacements made to bring the car to top condition.
Today, this "limited edition" Golf GTI MK1 is presented in all its original splendour without even a scratch and with all its grit and mechanical reliability that distinguish it. A real collector’s item, one of a kind.
The car is in Messina (Sicily), Italy.
