Jakob Nieweg was born in Hogebeintum in 1877 as the son of a preacher. Under the influence of painter/art pedagogue H.P. Bremmer and painter/critic Just Havelaar, Nieweg laid down his function as pastor in 1914 to devote himself to art in Heemstede. In 1919, he left for Amersfoort, where he lived until his death.
Together with, among others, Dirk Nijland and Charley Toorop, he belonged to the founders of 'De Brug' in 1926, an artist association that represented realism that was accessible to a wide audience.
Nieweg refused to join the ‘Kultuurkamer’ in 1941 and he could not exhibit anymore. Instead, he became active as a pastor once more and was involved in the resistance. After the liberation, Jakob Nieweg started painting again.
