An "arte povera" multiple hourglass, made of turned wood which is covered with sheets of engravings that are colored, cut-out and pasted onto the wood and which is then covered with multiple coats of a varnish called "sandracca" (which is a natural resin) in order to produce the high-gloss finish simulating laquer. The top and bottom are decorated with characters dressed in 18th century attire : there is a man with an magnifying glass ; a man turning his back towards the spectators wearing a giant wig ; one of the children that was led into the light by the goddess Lucina, is holding a sign that is marked with LUX ; a chinaman with a blowpipe ; a small image of a nobleman etc ..
The 4 different phials would give an approximate idea of the same period of time.
