Terence (Publius Terentius Afer) was a Roman playwright born in Carthage and sold as a slave in Rome. His comedies were performed for the first time around 170–160 BC. He is considered as one of the greatest Roman playwrights.

Anne Dacier (1647-1720) was a French philologist and writer. She made numerous translations of classics of great importance in the following centuries.
