Gustave Camus organised his first solo exhibition in 1937 which resulted in a subsidy and the prize Godecharle. This price was a trip to Italy where he got several offers to exhibit in Paris (1938-1939).
In 1933 he founded, along with Georges Wasterlain (Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont, 1889 - Aalst, 1963) the art group "Wonen in het land van Charleroi."
Besides painting he also worked as a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen (1951-1976) where he was also director from 1961 to 1966 and from 1975 to 1976.
