Hugo Duchateau graduated as a glass artist to the then Provincial Higher Institute of Architecture and Applied Arts of Hasselt and did an internship at stained-glass artist Roger Daniëls. From 1963 to 1966 he exercised the profession of stained-glass artist and later on he was a teacher at the Academy of Heusden-Zolder and Genk. From 1972 he was a teacher of graphic arts at the Higher Institute for Visual Communication and Design in Genk.
Various works by the artist can be found in the collections of the SMAK in Ghent, the MUHKA in Antwerp, and the PMMK in Ostend. Also in the Flemish Parliament, at the airport of Zaventem, and the Limburg Provincial Government building works by the artist are exhibited or processed in the Interior. In the Open air museum in Bokrijk the installation "Het Vreemde Bos" can be found.
