Guybert, Philbert; Roch Janvier; Guillaume Vaussard; François Citois. Le Oeuvres du médecin charitable.
Large 12mo: 748 pages, with two-page table of contents.
Original vellum (stained) and front hinge detached, with front end papers absent. This copy does have the engraved title page, but has not title page, but carries a contents list at the rear.
No copy is listed in US or UK and only three are listed on WorldCat in Paris (2) and Bordeaux.
First published in 1623, the Médecin charitable went through over 60 iterations during the next fifty years and grew from a volume of just 101 pages (when it appeared with L'Apothiquaire charitable, to a volume of over 1000 pages. Most editions included additional treatises by various authors and the books were intended to provide very wide coverage of issues such as blood letting, surgical techniques, jam making, bandaging, remedies and recipes, and even embalming!
This volume includes 17 treatises.
There is some occasional marginal old damp staining, but apart from the problems identified above, it is a full and very readable copy in clean condition. It is rather rare to find the lovely engraved title page present.
A little effort and expense on the binding would make this a very lovely volume.
