Hardwood, beautiful patina.

Lobi communities are structured around spirits of nature.
When they are honoured, these Wathil show their goodwill through
heavy rainfall and good health. If ignored, they withdraw it,
causing devastating epidemics, drought and suffering.

These spirits pass on to soothsayers (thildar) the laws that the followers
must follow to receive their protection, and these religious laws
are the social glue of the community.

These spirits are represented by wooden sculptures, called Bateba.
These Bateba may be tall or small, figurative or abstract, and may have
a number of different poses symbolising power or a particular talent
that the spirit uses to protect its owners...
