A triptych (from Greek τρίπτυχον “three” + ptychē “fold”) is a picture or relief carving divided in three parts, which can be joined by hinges on the side.
A triptych is typically an altarpiece where the two outer panels can be folded in towards the central one. It was needed both for special liturgical requirements and for transport needs.
This unique painting on wooden panel depicts the Nativity of Christ. The Holy Child is lying on the sheet, on Virgin Mary’s lap. The whole triptych is embellished with beautiful decorations and Byzantine style painted bas-reliefs.
An antique piece, showing several traces of wear and tear.
