Jaguar had been causing sensations in the automotive world for decades with its low, curvy, and sensual bodies and its superior engineering. Yet, in 1961, the world was once again excited by the introduction of the Jaguar E-type - a car that combined the styling of a Le Mans racer with the amenities of a roadster.
Notable in that it was the first production model that was not designed for Jaguar by the legendary William Lyons, the E-type, indeed, had its origins in the sports-racing world. Taking the 1956-7 racing project and redeveloping it for the road, the E-type had a monocoque shell bolted to a tubular structure.
Aerodynamically styled, the model had all-independent suspension and chassis-mounted differential which were both innovations for Jaguar.
Complementing its sleek styling, the Jaguar E-type had an updated 3.8 litre six-cylinder engine with twin-cams, front suspension and all disc brakes. A top speed of 150 miles per hour and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in seven seconds enhanced the car's powerful image. The hinged unified bonnet with its downward tilt allows almost unlimited access to the extraordinary engine, besides accentuating the car's sporty image.
The Jaguar E-type was so successful and so popular that for ten years - from 1961 to 1971- the model enjoyed high production numbers and a timeless image of speed, style and "pizazz". In its debut year of 1961, the Jaguar E-type was chosen as "Car of the Year". With power, style and luxury, it was the peak of perfection for Jaguar. Over the years, Jaguar had developed a reputation for classic sports cars, for power combined with comforts, and with the Jaguar E-type that reputation was never before so perfectly realised.
