Nori-Shige is a netsuke carver from the beginning of the 19th century.
His signature is referenced under N°292 in the appendices (page 15) of the Ko-Ji-Hô-Ten (see pictures)
"A good worker in ivory, who produced many medium sized groups of figures, whose dress patterns were lightly engraved and whose composition was rather elaborate.
The signature, written in kaisho characters, is generally without reserve. (Netsuke, a comprehensive study based on M.T. Hindson collection by Neil K. Davies, Faber&Faber Ltd London 1974, page 136 - see picture).
In this specific case, he represents two children, playing around a large bag which is with little doubt supposed to be Ho-Teï's.Ho-Teï is certainly the most popular amongst the 7 gods of good fortune (Shichi-Fuku-jin).
He takes his origin in a 10th century priest famous for his fat body and protruding belly, for the large canvas bag he was carrying along. (Ho-Teï or Pu-taï as he was also called, literally means "canvas bag".), and for his ability to interact with children and play with them.
Here Ho-teï is not part of the group, but the children and the bag point for sure towards his missing figure.
