The containment at Cholm (German: "Kessel von Cholm") was a containment of German troops by the Red Army during the Second World War. The containment took place between 9 January 1942 and 6 February 1942.
The event took place at the Russian town of Cholm, in the winter of 1942. As a result of the Soviet winter offensive, approximately 5000 German soldiers were trapped. They formed part of the German Sixteenth Army (16. Armee of the Wehrmacht) and were named "Kampfgruppe Scherer". The containment lasted for 107 days and the German defenders could only maintain their position thanks to the supply of air, including Gotha Go 242 and DFS 230 gliders. The German troops hardly had any heavy weapons and were under nearly constant artillery fire. Only in spring could they be relieved.
Because the Germans held up against a large enemy force majeure, the soldiers concerned received an exclusive distinction, namely the "Cholmschild". In addition, various personal awards were awarded.
