92 folded sheets, i.e. 182 pages with woodblock prints.
Size: 22.9 x 15.9 x 2 cm (hanshibon).
Condition: cover with signs of wear. Front cover with a sticker. Loose back cover. Some pages with a pencil note. Two woodblock prints were partially retraced with pencil. Five sheets were entirely or partially cut loose, but are still present (see the photos). The book is otherwise in good condition.
Lot will be packaged with care and shipped insured with track and trace.
'Teikin Ōrai (...) a set of models for letter-writing, became, (...) a school textbook (...) . Hokusai made no attempt to illustrate the letters, (...) , but seizes upon some incident or object mentioned by the author and builds a drawing around it, situating his pictures in contemporary Edo (...) .' (Jack Hillier, The Art of Hokusai in Book Illustration, p. 198-201).
