Mainline History: In the First World War the Belgian railways lost a lot of stock to the war. After World War I many German locomotives ended up at the Belgian and French railways as reparation payment. Like in 1919 when three Bayerische S 3/6 locomotives were assigned to Belgium which were intended for pulling express trains. These three locomotives were handed to the Belgian State Railways (Chemins de fer de l'État Belge) in 1920 It concerned the Bavarian locomotives 3620, 3646 and 3649 which in 1918 were delivered to the Bavarian K.Bay.Sts.B.

At the Belgian State Railways, they were classified as type 59 with the running numbers 5920, 5946 and 5949. The as type 59 classified locomotives were initially stationed in Brussels-North where they were deployed along with the Type 61 (Prussian S 10.1) locomotives, among others, were used to pull heavy express trains to Ostend and Herbesthal. In 1922 the locomotives were stationed in Ostend, but stood there idly. In the same year they were stationed in Tournai where they were deployed to Brussels and to Lille (Belgium). The locomotives were only a short period in active duty with the Belgian railways and in 1923 they were all 3 put aside. The locomotives were scrapped in 1924. In contrast to the usual brown/black colour scheme of the Chemins de fer de l’État Belge, these type 59 locomotives never driven around in this livery but retained their original green colour up to their breaking up in 1924.
