Mainline History: The Series BR 110, of which a total of 383 were built, were formerly known as the BR E10 of the German Federal Railroad (DB). In the 1950s the DB was looking for a locomotive that met all the requirements of the different tasks facing the company. A number of prototypes were built, and from this came the BR’s E10, E40, E41 and E 50. Now known as the German 'Unit locomotives' and have already celebrated their 50th anniversary. The 110 series was specifically built for use in the express train services.
