Headgear of an Initiate of the BWAMI - LEGA - D.R Congo
Materials: Buttons, animal horn and Vegetable Fibres.
These kinds of masks were used by initiates of the Bwami cult, a “half secret” initiatory society which organised the social structure, and watched over the stability of the Lega community.
The Lega are a Bantu forest people from Central Africa, mainly established in the Democratic Republic of Congo, at the east of the Lualaba River, near the borders of Rwanda and Burundi, in the provinces of the southern Kivu and Maniema.
