The subject is taken from an oil painting on canvas made by François Boucher (Paris, 29 September 1703 - Paris, 30 May 1770) in 1747. The original is kept in the Louvre Museum.

Technique: Extracting colours from plants, with the technique of 'grass juice', is a method, unfortunately, almost completely abandoned because of its practical difficulties in the use and its easy deterioration over time. This technique, however, was popular in the eighteenth century, mainly in Japan, to decorate high quality papers, fans and fabrics such as rich people kimonos. The effect obtained with this technique lies in the subtlety of the watercolours mixed with a good drafting and rendering of tempera.
In Europe, this technique has seen widespread use, between the 17th and 18th centuries. It was used to paint tapestries and fabrics using vegetable colours through the "imbibendo" technique, dipping the canvas without a previous preparation with plasters and glue, which was essential when working with oil colours and tempera. The technique is somewhat reminiscent of Renaissance paintings.
The rendering itself can be considered a mix between watercolour and thin tempera but, unlike the latter, the 'grass juice' technique does not provide a pigment binding agent. In fact, thanks to the vegetable colours diluted in water and enriched with an alum solution, which acts not only as a binder but as a fixative, bright and luminous colours are obtained. The drawing of the fabric was usually made with the technique of dusting, so that the colours used went from walnut to dark blue, almost black, taken from the vines.
