“Quite remarkable account” (Chadenat- 641). “The Monteil Mission was a political and topographical mission with the aim of gathering knowledge of the lands between Niger and Chad that hadn’t been explored since the voyage of H. Barth (1850-54), and in particular the Say-Barroua line, which arbitrarily demarcated the areas with a large French and English influence in regions which were in fact rather poorly known. Monteil was the first Frenchman to visit Lake Chad and the first European to go there by way of the Atlantic. He passed protectorate treaties (in San and Liptako) and a commerce treaty with the sultan of Sokoto.”
