Beautiful painting filled with detail.
Good condition, the small imperfections are typical of Lilanga’s work.
George Lilanga is one of the masters of contemporary Tanzanian (and African) art.
Lilanga (1934 - 2005) was a Tanzanian painter. He studied at the Tingatinga painting school of Dar es Salaam and is also known internationally for his unique pictorial style, characterised by brightly coloured figures and sharp silhouettes, highly dynamic and caricatural. In 1978 he participated in a group exhibition of African artists in Washington. Among the 280 presented works, approximately 100 were made by Lilanga. It was on this occasion that he was compared to Dubuffet. Keith Haring himself stated in an interview that he was influenced by Lilanga’s works.
