Aboe Bakar was previously (in 1893) published as a serial in the Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad.
The story takes place at the end of the nineteenth century on Java. The child of a white man and a native woman is not recognised by the father. The child of a white man and a native woman is not acclaimed by the father. He converted to Islam, adopted the name Aboe Bakar and even went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. But also in the kampong there is no room for this Indo.
