The Khazars (also Chazars, Chozars, Khazars; Hebrew Kuzarim כוזרים; Turkish Hazarlar; Greek Χάζαροι; Russian Xähärhär; Persian خزر; Latin Gazari or Cosri) were an originally nomadic and later semi-nomadic Turkic people in Central asia.
In the 7th. century after Christ, the Khazars founded an independent Khaganate in the northern Caucasus on the coast of the Caspian Sea. From the 8th to the early 9th. century, the Jewish religion became the most important religion in the kingdom. Whether only a thin upper class or the rest of the population accepted and practiced the new religion is controversial. It is said that there were also Christians and Muslims among the Khazars.
The Khazars were important allies of the Byzantine Empire against the Arab Caliphate. In particular, through long-distance trade, they became a significant regional power and controlled in the bloom of their power development large parts of today's southern Russia, the west of later Kazakhstan, today's eastern Ukraine, parts of the Caucasus and the Crimean peninsula. At the end of the 10th century their power was broken by the Kievan Rus broken, and the Khazars largely disappeared from history. Concepts, according to which a large part of the Khazars in Eastern European Judaism was absorbed, are controversial.
