Willem van Malsen (Utrecht, 7 January 1940 – Amsterdam, 1 June 2005) was a Dutch artist, best known in the 1970s and 1980s. Van Malsen was an artist, painter, illustrator, cartoonist, déchirure maker, inventor and writer. His oeuvre can be seen as one large formal experiment, in which he applied many different influences and movements in his own unique form.
Van Malsen was born as the son of the photographer Willem van Malsen. From 1967 to 1970, he worked from Paris as a political artist for the French magazine L'Enragé, Vrij Nederland and De Haagse Post. In 1970, he returned to the Netherlands. He illustrated work by authors including Mensje van Keulen, Kees van Kooten, Cees Nooteboom and Gerrit Komrij. His work has been exhibited in Paris and Amsterdam.
In 1999, Willem van Malsen (illustrations) and Kees van Kooten (text) published the children’s book "Het Schaampaard".
In June 2005 he died in his hometown of Amsterdam of a cerebral haemorrhage. [Wikipedia]
