First instituted in 1813 as the highest Prussian war decoration, the Iron Cross was updated in 1939, and by the end of the war, with its enhancement of 'Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves' was awarded to a total of 882 soldiers. Those who received this medal are considered by military historians to be the best soldiers of their time. All of the recipients of the Oak Leaves pictured in this trilogy are honoured with a short biography and for the most part feature with an unpublished colour portrait.
