(Kyōsai rakuga) 'Perhaps the finest of the artist's illustrated books, combining elements that are Chinese, Japanese, Western and Kyōsai. The thin Chinese-style paper, translucent colouring and occasional 'boneless' (...without outline) printing are reminiscent of Chinese colour printed albums... The sense of acutely observed nature (...) and drama has elements of Western realism. (...) have an energy and eccentricity that could only be Kyōsai.' (Timothy Clark, Demon of painting The art of Kawanabe Kyōsai, page 144)
