Description
Masks (1) - cowrie, wood, fabric - Dan - Africa
2nd half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

The Dan ethnic group is mainly composed of farmers, located in northeastern Liberia and western Ivory Coast. It is known for the variety and quality of its many masks, used during ceremonies marked by dances and songs.

More elaborate Dan "Tangagle" masks are used during the masquerade to bless the village. With large round hollowed eyes, they are used in races where masked characters race alongside unmasked participants.
