Pipibudze or “Man” is a standard Kwele dancemask type used within the context of the Bwiti society. It is pure and simple with a fixed outlay of details. Used as a dancemask, it represents the link between the village and the forest, i.e. the bond between man and beast, in this case the chimpanzee, the chief of the woods. In the dance the local members of the society acted, moved and made the noises of the king of the wilderness, the humanized primate, stessing their common origin. Unlike the gorilla, the disruptor, the chimp is the friend of man in his struggle to survive the dangers of the bush. Fine, stylized heart- shaped face, combining animal and human features. Pointed nose opposite pointed chin
