African Wooden Mask - BAULE Ethnic Group - from Ivory Coast
Collected in the region of Béoumi, near Bouaké, in Ivory Coast.
Baule Mblo mask. This type of anthropomorphic mask represents an important person of the village. The facial features are very refined, conferring to this piece a serene appearance. With scarifications on the chin and on the forehead. The hairdo is finely braided and ends in a little bunch, there is also a little beard under the chin.
This type of African Baule mask was used during entertainment and rejoicing festivities. This Mblo mask had a protective function.
This mask is representative of Baule art, with a lovely balance between the forms and the volumes, presenting finely carved details.
